REACH

The goal of the REACH Regulation is to assure the safe use of chemicals throughout their entire life cycle. In contrast with many other legislations, REACH places the burden of proof with industry.

The conditions under which safe use of a chemical can be guaranteed are documented in a Chemical Safety Report and submitted to the European authorities as part of a registration dossier. The safety information generated must be communicated throughout the supply chain by means of an extended Safety Data Sheet (eSDS). In parallel with this registration and communication process, a limited number of substances - the so-called substances of very high concern - may be subject to a specific authorisation or restriction procedure.

Finally, REACH also triggers a whole new range of communication duties. On the way to REACH compliance, companies have to communicate with other registrants, with European and national authorities, as well as with their customers and suppliers.
