In chemicals related regulations a number of scientific aspects are typically involved. The chemistry of the substance concerned forms the basis for any further assessment. The chemistry not only constitutes the identity of the substance, it also provides some of the building blocks for both the hazard and exposure evaluation.  The adverse effects of the substance towards humans (toxicology) and the environment (ecotoxicology) are studied in a hazard assessment, which - in combination with an exposure assessment - provides insight in the risks associated with the use of that chemical substance.
