When submitting a dataset (e.g. REACH registration dossier, CLP notification, Food Contact dossier) to the authorities, the first aspect that requires attention is a proper identification of the substance involved. Although this might seem trivial, a thorough evaluation of the available information is often required, and may be of critical importance for the acceptance of the dossier. A mere copy of the information available on the MSDS of the product will in most cases not be sufficient.

• Product definition: is the product a substance, mixture or article?
• Substance identification: is the substance a mono-constituent, multi-constituent or UVCB substance? Is the substance a polymer or not?
